That said, United have shown a resilience this term that could yet take them all the way again. No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League title, but against youthful opponents, Sir Alex Ferguson's side could again make their experience count.

FC Barcelona
Like Sir Alex, Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink has won the competition before, with PSV Eindhoven in 1988. His opposite number at FC Barcelona Josep Guardiola did so as a player and the 38-year-old now aims to match that achievement as a coach. The build up to the match has focused on Barcelona's awesome firepower but the key to the tie could come at the other end of the pitch.

Chelsea
Chelsea have never failed to score at the Camp Nou in their four previous visits in the UEFA Champions League and as they showed against Liverpool FC at Anfield in the quarter-finals, it pays to expect the unexpected with Hiddink at the helm. Either way, the road to Rome is far from straightforward for any of the four semi-finalists.
